I am on hiatus until further notice due to being assaulted (aggravated battery) by a pedicab passenger the weekend of January 23rd.

If you'd like to help us cover medical/dental costs and or catch the perpetrator, click below. Funds will also be used to support this free pedicab service and expand it. =)
Thanks in advance!
Ken

2/5/2010 ::: Update #4
May go out tonight, not sure. Would be good to keep people's spirits up in the United States of Enron though. We have a page up to find my Southeast(?) Asian, possibly Cambodian, attacker. Keep in mind this is all speculative -- he is definitely Asian though. His friend looked more Chinese, heavyset, babyfaced. Attacker highly likely from East Oakland. Out of towners wouldn't randomly whale on strangers because they aren't comfortable enough with the area. Click here to join.

Here's some notes on Cambodian gang members...

Note to fellow law-abiding Oaklanders: get your own .40 guns and TRAIN with them now. Pay for good lessons so that you'll be comfortable with your weapons just as you are comfortable with any other potentially dangerous tool: circular saw, stick shift car, etc. You'll thank me later. Never walk around Oakland un-defended. The police already can't defend you. They mainly respond to crimes after the fact. Neither will your Berkeley/"liberal" values protect you. (Your other option is to move.) Psychopaths only defer to force. If you can't obtain a CCW permit, get a guard card.

Tooth is better after the root canal op but is still really tender. Bill from American Medical Response (ambulance I appreciated but didn't ask for) came this week, for a cool $1,886.31. Highland Hospital (nice view of Oaktown from there by the way) hasn't sent their bill yet. To anyone who's followed me knows, I've never made money on this business. This incident really set me back financially. But that's okay--most businesses don't make profits until the four or five year mark. Maybe I can deduct all my medical bills as expenses. Depending on the take-aways though the experience may be priceless. I will power through.

2/3/2010 ::: Update #3
Went to an Endodontist this morning for a 2nd opinion. They don't see any fracture worth extracting teeth over but they did do a root canal right there on the spot. I figured I'd get it over with. So there went $930, or more than I've made with the business since inception (2008).

On the bright side(?), I keep my real tooth and the tooth will never be sensitive to hot or cold again. (In a root canal operation, the endodontist drills a hole in your tooth and drills out the old nerve and other inflamed material.)

On another bright side, I've been spending more time gardening.

Finally and not least, I'd like to thank those of you who've contributed donations to my getting well and business development fund. I'm not sure whether to put your names here (perhaps First name, last initial?) and will decide that soon. I deeply appreciate your kindness and generosity.

Ken

2/1/2010 ::: Update #2
Dentist took another xray today, front left tooth has a horizontal fracture up in the bone above gumline so can't save tooth. Looks like I'll need tooth removed and a fake implanted tooth.

Going to Highland tomorrow for general checkup, then endodontist on Wednesday for 2nd opinion on the tooth.

1/26/2010 ::: Update #1
Attack took place on the sidewalk at Broadway and Webster in front of a restaurant and car dealership.

Details:

Due to this surprise assault I blacked out and woke up with many head and face injuries and was taken to Highland Hospital. Also am going to the dentist for tooth injury, I may need a fake front tooth now. I really would like to know what this guy was thinking if anything, and why his friends and restaurant security did little to help me.

If you would like to donate to Backseat Pedicabs to help defray the cost of operating this downtown Oakland service, please use the button below. We will use funds to pay medical and dental bills, track down the assailant, hire staff, repair pedicabs and generally keep things going. Thank you in advance!

Big hug and thanks to all my friends, customers, OPD, Highland Hospital trauma center staff, fellow bicyclists who came to my aid and staff at the restaurant for their help, concern and well wishes. This seems to have been a completely random act by one irresponsible person.
